CHAPTER 4: THE BREAD OF LIFE (part 1)

“I am the Bread of Life. . . . As the living Father hath sent Me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth Me, even he shall live by Me.”—Jn vi. 35, 37.

We have to consider in this chapter the mystery of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. It is manifestly impossible within the limits of a single chapter to consider it in its completeness, nor shall we attempt to do so. What we shall try to think about is Jesus as the Bread of Life.

The offering of the Mass is essentially a Godward action, our Lord is present primarily as Priest and Victim to plead His Sacrifice for us; it is thus that the Mass is a “remembrance” of Him which He commands us to “do.” He is also present that we may worship Him with intimate, loving reverence. But it is for neither of these purposes that He comes in the precise manner that He does come.
